CAR Would Like to Remind You to Please Be Careful and Mindful of Your Personal Safety

It’s come to our attention that there is an individual calling REALTORS® in Connecticut to inquire about listings who then tries to steer the conversation to one of a personal nature causing the salespersons to feel uneasy. Please refer to the REALTOR Safety Section of the CAR website for a host of valuable resources and tips to help protect yourself and your colleagues.

Hotsheet Legal Tip

Landlord’s Improper Requests

When your landlord client tells you he won’t accept any Section 8 tenants, you must screen all potential tenants for him and you must run a credit report on every potential tenant before they view the property, run the other way. Not accepting Section 8 tenants is a violation of state fair housing law and screening potential tenants can be viewed as eliminating potential tenants who are members of protected classes. Inform your landlord that 1) you must terminate your listing agreement with him because he’s asking you to violate fair housing laws and 2) he should expect the same reaction from every other licensee/REALTOR®.
