In order for your child or stepchild to be eligible to apply for a scholarship, you must be an active Connecticut REALTOR®, REALTOR-ASSOCIATE®, local Board Executive Officer or CAR staff member for
one year as of the application deadline. In addition to the eligibility requirement
you must meet,
your child or stepchild must meet either of these conditions:
- Successfully completed three years of high school or an equivalent education and already be enrolled as a high school senior; OR
- Be enrolled at an accredited school/college and have at least one year left to complete.
The Connecticut Association of REALTORS® is proud to once again provide two categories of Raymond F. Gates, Jr. Memorial Scholarships. The first category is based solely on "Academic Excellence" (purely academic factors). The second category is based upon "Scholastic Achievement" (academic performance) along with extracurricular considerations (i.e. volunteer work, civic activity, etc.). This second category also requires an applicant to submit a short essay.
Unlike past years, applicants can only apply for one category.
In order to help you decide which category is appropriate for you, the following are
suggested guidelines:
Academic Excellence
- Minimum B+ Grade Point Average
- Minimum 1200 Combined SAT Score (for tests taken prior to March 2005) or
Minimum 1800 Combined SAT Score (for tests taken in March 2005 or later)
Scholastic Achievement
- Minimum C Grade Point Average
- Minimum 900 Combined SAT Score (for tests taken prior to March 2005) or
Minimum 1400 Combined SAT Score (for tests taken in March 2005 or later)
These are truly intended as guidelines to determine which category you most likely fall within. The "pool" of applicants varies each year and, as applicants are judged against each other rather than against any specific criteria, you should not let these guidelines inhibit you from applying for a scholarship in the category of your choice.
Should you have any questions regarding the two categories of scholarships being offered, please feel free to contact
Marcia Leclerc or
Beth Mecteau. We can also be reached at the CAR Office at 1-800-335-4862.
HOW SCHOLARSHIPS ARE DETERMINED
The total amount of money available depends upon contributions received and interest earned as of 6/1/10. The amount of each individual scholarship is left to the Committee's discretion but, in past years, has ranged from $500 to $2,500. Priority will be given to applicants in the following order: High School Seniors, College Students and then Graduate Students.
As you would expect, to determine which particular applicants merit scholarship assistance is a difficult task. To make the final allocation of available scholarships, the committee will review all applicant information, including cumulative grades, SAT/GMAT/LSAT/GRE scores (as applicable), class ranking, scholastic activities, personal references and other indicators of potential success. Note that the selection of recipients is not based in any way on race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin or any handicap.
Following the committee's thorough review of all applicant information, scholarship checks are presented to the winners at the Connecticut Association of REALTORS® July Board of Directors meeting. Applicants are notified as to whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship by the end of June and winners are invited to this meeting.
Once a scholarship has been awarded, the Connecticut Association of REALTORS®, Inc. assumes no further responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs or debts of scholarship recipients. Likewise, the Association specifically reserves the right to modify or discontinue the program at any time.
