One of the largest financial obligations facing families is the cost of higher education. Today, our children's future calls for schooling well beyond high school and, make no mistake about it, that future is going to carry a very high price tag!
The membership of the Connecticut Association of REALTORS®, Inc. (CAR) is proud to provide a program of scholarships for children and stepchildren of Connecticut REALTORS®, REALTOR-ASSOCIATES®, local Board Association Executives and CAR staff members. This scholarship program is made available through the generous, on-going contributions that CAR receives in memory of former CAR Executive Vice President Raymond F. Gates, Jr.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE
In order for your child or stepchild to be eligible to apply for a scholarship, you must be an active Connecticut REALTOR®, REALTOR-ASSOCIATE®, local Board Executive Officer or CAR staff member for one year as of the application deadline. In addition to the eligibility requirement you must meet, your child or stepchild must meet either of these conditions:
The Connecticut Association of REALTORS®, Inc. requires that the following items be completed and
submitted no later than May 22, 2008:
High School Seniors
College/Graduate School Students
HOW SCHOLARSHIPS ARE DETERMINED
Two categories of scholarships will be awarded again this year. One category is based solely on
academic achievement and the second category is based on academic performance along with
extracurricular considerations (i.e. volunteer work, civic activity, etc.) and an essay. Priority will be given
to applicants in the following order: High School Seniors, College Students and then Graduate Students.
The total amount of money available depends upon contributions received and interest earned as of
6/1/08. The amount of each individual scholarship is left to the Committee’s discretion but, in past years,
has ranged from $500 to $2,500.
As you would expect, to determine which particular applicants merit scholarship assistance is a difficult
task. To make the final allocation of available scholarships, the committee will review all applicant
information, including cumulative grades, SAT/GMAT/LSAT/GRE scores (as applicable), class ranking,
scholastic activities, personal references and other indicators of potential success. Note that the selection
of recipients is not based in any way on race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin or any handicap.
Following the committee's thorough review of all applicant information, scholarship checks are presented
to the winners at the Connecticut Association of REALTORS® Board of Directors meeting to be held on
July 15th at the Hawthorne Inn in Berlin. You will receive notification of whether or not you have been
awarded a scholarship by mid-June.
Once a scholarship has been awarded, the Connecticut Association of REALTORS®, Inc. assumes no
further responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs or debts of scholarship recipients. Likewise, the
Association specifically reserves the right to modify or discontinue the program at any time.
